About the project
Shortly after starting my blog (Exile Lifestyle) back in 2009, at a moment in which I was thinking about upending my life in Los Angeles and traveling the world full-time, I started a humble little list through which I could send folks who liked my work additional information about what I was working on, or share blog posts they might have missed.
This missive has taken many shapes over the years, and I’ve used probably a half-dozen or more different services and platforms to send it. The basic premise has remained consistent through it all, though: a more direct line of contact with my readers that’s resulted in countless one-on-one exchanges, shared stories, and real-world friendships.

Ask Colin
Way back in the day, I wrote advice columns for local newspapers. Years later, I started writing advice column-ish posts on Exile Lifestyle, and that evolved into its own publication, Ask Colin, which I eventually folded into my main newsletter as a periodic supplement.

Some Thoughts About Living
This was a rebrand of Ask Colin that was meant to widen the column’s remit, making room for guest posts. Managing other authors became too much additional work on top of my existing weekly publication schedule, though, so I pulled the plug.

This was a short-lived newsletter-based column that was meant to be less personal and broader in topic than the newsletter, but it never quite found its feet or voice. I sunset it after about a dozen editions.

Writing and Such
Another newsletter expansion (this one focused on the writing industry and craft) that didn’t quite justify its existence. I shut it down after a few months of lackluster performance.
